The Real Breakthrough: Antibodies Against Amyloid
For the first time, there are medications that can not only alleviate but also slow down the progression of Alzheimer's. They target the beta-amyloid protein, which accumulates in the brains of affected individuals. The two most prominent are Lecanemab (brand name Leqembi) and Donanemab (Kisunla).

Caution is also advised regarding dietary supplements. For instance, observational data suggested that glucosamine might unfavorably influence the course of the disease in some individuals. It's important to remember: observational studies only show correlations, not causation. No one should take supplements based on a single headline—instead, discuss it thoroughly with a doctor.
What You Can Truly Do Today
Perhaps the greatest hope lies not in a pill, but in prevention. A major scientific analysis (Lancet Commission) concluded that a significant portion of dementia cases could be delayed or avoided through modifiable factors. These include:
- Regular exercise—it promotes blood flow to the brain.
- A healthy, Mediterranean diet rich in vegetables, olive oil, nuts, and fish.
- Monitoring blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight.
- Good sleep—during sleep, the brain "cleanses" waste products.
- Mental and social activity—learning, social connections, engaging tasks.
- Treating hearing loss and quitting smoking.
None of this is a guarantee—but it is what science can most confidently recommend today.
