Ashwagandha Moon Milk – The Ayurvedic Nightcap for Stress and Restlessness
Moon Milk is an ancient Ayurvedic ritual that has gained a loyal following in Western kitchens in recent years. The idea is as simple as it is brilliant: warm milk, soothing spices, and a touch of Ashwagandha combine to create a velvety evening drink that gently calms body and mind.
Traditionally, Moon Milk is consumed about 30 minutes before bedtime. This is no coincidence: during this time, Ashwagandha unfolds its cortisol-lowering effect, while warm milk and nutmeg promote natural drowsiness. It's a ritual that consciously concludes the day – almost like a small meditation in a cup.
Ingredients (for 1 serving)
- 250 ml warm milk – traditionally cow's milk, but oat, almond, or cashew milk also work wonderfully (almond milk is particularly authentically Ayurvedic)
- ½ tsp Ashwagandha powder (organic quality) or the content of 1 capsule Ashwagandha KSM-66 (600 mg)
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon (Ceylon cinnamon preferred)
- 1 pinch freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 tsp honey or maple syrup (to taste, for vegans: agave nectar)
- Optional: ¼ tsp ground cardamom, 1 pinch black pepper (increases bioavailability), 1 tsp coconut oil
Preparation
- Heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat – do not boil, just until it's lightly steaming. The ideal temperature is around 60–65 °C (140-150 °F).
- Add Ashwagandha powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg to the warm milk and whisk vigorously with a small whisk or milk frother until everything is dissolved and the milk has a light foam on top.
- Remove from heat and stir in the honey now – honey loses its valuable enzymes if heated too much.
- Pour into a large, pre-warmed cup, optionally sprinkle another pinch of cinnamon on top – and enjoy slowly and mindfully, preferably without screens.

Why this combination works so well
Each ingredient in this recipe has its own calming effect: Ashwagandha has been shown to lower cortisol levels and helps the body transition out of stress mode. Nutmeg is traditionally attributed a mild sedative effect, though this is not proven for the small amount used here. Cinnamon can help regulate blood sugar levels. Warm milk contains tryptophan, a precursor to the sleep hormone melatonin, although in quantities far below an effective dose.
Ayurvedic tradition also considers Moon Milk to be Vata and Pitta-calming – particularly helpful for people who go to bed with racing thoughts or wake up with hot flashes at night.
💡 Product Tip: For Moon Milk, I recommend organic Ashwagandha powder of food-grade quality or alternatively KSM-66 capsules (simply open and stir in the contents). Both can be found on Amazon.de – pay attention to organic certification and origin. [Advertisement | View organic Ashwagandha powder on Amazon.de]
Disclaimer: Not a substitute for medical advice. Do not use Ashwagandha during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Consult a doctor beforehand if you have thyroid conditions, autoimmune diseases, or are taking medication. Use nutmeg only in the specified amount – too much nutmeg can be toxic.
